Some say bill won't spur alternative energy products

March 28, 2011

In an effort to spur alternative enegry projects, the Senate proposed a measure that would allow the state's electric companies to raise bills for its customers.

Herald/Times Tallahassee Bureau

The Florida Senate unveiled its plan Monday to allow Florida’s electric companies to raise average customer bills $1.40 to $2.60 a month to build solar and biomass energy plants for the next five years.

But because the measure also allows the electric monopolies to control the renewable energy market by earning as much as $377 million a year in additional revenue, the proposal drew warnings that it will stifle jobs and hurt customers over time.

“We will go out of business,’’ said Scott McIntyre, president of Solar Energy Management of St. Petersburg. “The Senate bill will not attract renewable energy to the state of Florida. It will not employ people.”

By contrast, Josh Kellam of Global Energy United, a Virginia-based solar panel manufacturer, said his company will employ 250-300 people at its Rivera Beach plant if the bill passes.

Kent Crook, president of Wire Masters of Miami, a residential and commercial electrician, said that he has received a Workforce Florida grant to retrain his employees in installing solar energy panels but has had to stop using it “because there are no jobs.”

He said the Senate bill won’t do anything to change that. “This bill before you basically only supports FPL and not small scale companies,’’ he said.

Crook and dozens of other members of a coalition of renewable energy companies are urging legislators to modify the bill to allow companies, such as big box retailers like Wal-Mart, to install rooftop solar panels and sell the excess power generated to other consumers.

A draft of the Senate bill included such a provision when it was released two weeks ago but that element is strongly opposed by Florida Power & Light, the principal promoter of the Senate bill.

Senate leaders pulled the bill, rewrote it, and stripped it of the measure to open the market to competitors to the utility companies.

“It was a technical glitch,’’ said Sen. Lizbeth Benacquisto, R-Wellington, the chairwoman of the committee.

She said that while she is open to allowing other companies to generate electricity, they must be required to abide by the same requirements as the electricity companies “who are bound by an obligation to serve in any storm…they’ll come out in any circumstance to repair the facilities on top of the roof.”

The committee will take up amendments to the bill next week.

Wiremasters Electric Supports Renewable Energy in Florida

October 26, 2010

West Palm Beach, FL – Wiremasters Electric announced today its sponsorship of the Florida Alliance for Renewable Energy (FARE), aimed at advancing a renewable energy marketplace in Florida based on widespread, distributed generation of renewable energy. This sponsorship is  part of a special matching contribution grant being made by a global philanthropic organization committed to match corporate and individual contributions and donations received by FARE.

Wiremasters Electric, a South Florida electrical services company, has created a subsidiary called EnergyMasters, specializing in energy efficiency and renewable energy. Wiremasters, on becoming a partner-level supporter of FARE, will receive twice the return on their investment for their dollars due to the matching contribution from the global philanthropic organization.

Wiremasters president Kent Crook encourages other corporations to join in this investment in Florida’s future in renewable energy. “I believe we should do our part to help homeowners and business owners of Florida to produce their own energy from the free powers of the sun,” Crook says. “Rising electric bills make this an imperative priority.”

According to Mike Antheil, Executive Director of FARE, “We are excited to welcome Wiremasters Electric as our newest local partner. Their participation proves that there are companies right here in Florida who will thrive, grow, and create jobs if we can establish a renewable energy marketplace.”

The matching contribution program will continue through October 31st, 2010. The program is open to participation from companies both large and small, individuals, manufacturers, installers, designers and engineers, roofers, electricians, and all the various types of technology that FARE represents, including solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, tidal & ocean current power and solar thermal.

Kent Crook, owner of Wiremasters Electric, went a different route. "Everyone in my business is hurting. I realized I need to stay in front of my customers' faces." Kent Crook hired Conterio's born2bhip.com to format his electronic newsletters. He updates the content himself each month. His startup newsletter featured electronic wiring tips for hurricane preparedness. The newsletter included a discount coupon, which a handful of customers redeemed. "One customer told me he had a list of things but was putting it off. When he saw my newsletter, he called."

Kent Crook is going places. Many, many places. As I was out and about the last couple of weeks, who did I see over and over again?

None other than Kent Crook from KC Wiremasters Electric. This guy was at a Chamber South meeting, then he was at our office, then I saw him at a political fundraiser in West Kendall and then I ran into him at Casa Lario's in South Miami. This guy is a mover and shaker and a pretty darn good electrician too, so as the saying goes, Shop LOCAL, and if you need a great electrician, call Kent at 305-385-9379.
