SHOULD YOU TURN OFF YOUR WATER HEATER OR LEAVE IT ON?

As a routine, most people turn off certain electrical appliances in order to save money. One common question among our customers is whether their water heaters should also be turned off.

At wiremasters electric, we want our customers to use energy efficiently while saving money on their electric bill. Hence, we recommend that water heaters should be turned off occasionally.

Why turn off your water heater?

Turning off your water heater, like many other electrical appliances, can save you money each month on your bill. A small amount of heat escapes when the water heater is turned on, even though it’s well insulated. Typically, this loss of energy is about 10 percent of your bill. If you were to turn off your water heater, you could save that 10 percent and prevent additional energy loss.

How to turn off your water heater

Most water heaters consist of an on/off disconnect switch that can turn off the appliance for you. If you wish to use it for any purpose, we recommend that you turn it on a half hour before you need it and turn it off right before you start using the hot water.

Another method of turning off your water heater would be to install a timer. This saves you from manually having to turn on and off your water heater; however, the price to install a timer can be a little costly.

This is the best method to save energy and money. If you were to wait until after you’re done using the hot water to turn the heater off, it would start heating up the new water in the tank resulting in a tank full of hot water and escaping heat.
